Be interested in their views about the work, or the project. Given their experience, they may have ideas about how you could streamline what you do. Learn from them if you can, and if you have any experience or information that could help them in their own field, give them the benefit of this knowledge as well.

Sometimes there are going to be unavoidable personality clashes, and you’ll need to find a way either to work around that, or regretfully cancel the contract if the difficulty is insurmountable. But the key is to keep the lines of communication open, so that any budding problems can hopefully be dealt with quickly and with respect, rather than festering unnoticed and suddenly bursting into something that requires drastic action.
