Breaking In New Running Shoes

Now that you have found the perfect running shoes — and if you are a seasoned runner, you know what a challenge that can be — your next task is breaking in the new shoes. How do you do that without, breaking in your foot, so to speak. Nothing is more discouraging than getting blisters after a long and satisfactory workout, so here are a few tips.
First make sure you have bought the right size; the shoes should be comfortable when you are trying them on at the store. The general rule is to pick shoes with approximately half an inch of space between your biggest toe and the front of the shoe, as this will keep your toes from banging against the shoe as you run. When you get them home, walk around for a good half hour or more and make certain you have picked the right shoe. If you have any doubts, return the shoes to the store and exchange for another pair. It is best to stop potential problems before they begin.
You should not consider shoes fully broken in until you have covered around 50 miles or so. In other words, don’t race a marathon or a half marathon with shoes that are any newer than this. In other words, allow a couple of weeks before the race. Include at least one long run with your new pair as part of the process added to some shorter runs to break in your new shoes.
